Word formation

SUFFIXES -OUS, -FUL and -LY

The famous trees herald Washington's rite of spring with a miraculous explosion of life and colour that blankets the city's open spaces in a sea of fragrant white and pale pink blossoms.
There are 3.020 cherry trees of different varieties that flower yearly, and over half of the trees are Yoshino Cherry trees.
In Japan, the cherry tree (or “sakura”) is a plant highly valued, and it is a powerful symbol which represents a time of renewal and optimism.

As you can see, words can be transformed by adding certain endings (called “suffixes”), like -ful, - ous, or -ly. For example:
Adjectives can be formed by adding suffixes to a noun:
- power → powerful
- miracle →  miraculous
Adverbs can be formed by adding suffixes to a noun:
- year → yearly
